The EIA expects total crude oil and petroleum net exports to average 750,000 bpd in 2020 compared with average net imports of 520,000 bpd in 2019. Crude production inched 100,000 barrels higher, back to its record high at 12.2 million bpd, the data showed. Refinery crude runs rose by 505,000 bpd, EIA data showed. U.S. crude oil imports from Canada accounted for 56% of all U.S. crude oil imports in 2019, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) Petroleum Supply Monthly. U.S. imports of crude oil remained relatively high through 2007 until the economic downturn in 2008–09 led to lower demand for petroleum products. Although EIA cannot identify which companies sell imported gasoline or gasoline refined from imported oil, it does publish data on the companies that import petroleum into the United States. However, the fact that a given company imported crude oil does not mean that those imports will be used to produce the gasoline sold to motorists as that company's brand of gasoline.
