Here you will find data on the estimated stock of social capital in each US county for the years 1990, 1997, 2005, 2009, and 2014. Table 3b lists the county social capital index and subindices as national percentiles. Figure 1 displays the state social capital scores in a map, and Figure 2 displays the county-level data. The aim of this project, which was funded by the European Commission (DGEMPL), has been three-fold: i) to assess how the notion of “social capital” has been conceptualised in the research literature; ii) to detail how it has been measured in national and international surveys; and iii) to identify priority areas for statistical development. At this level social capital is a community level resource or ‘collectively-owned capital’. Due to the challenges of data availability measures at the macro level often use secondary analysis of existing datasets not collected specifically to measure social capital. All state-level social capital measures are somewhat limited in terms of face validity. The social capital index constructed using the ANHCS data and the BRFSS data rely only on survey data. There are a few problems with aggregate measures of social capital such as the ANHCS and BRFSS measures. 1 Social Capital: Measurement and Consequences Robert Putnam1. This paper starts with a discussion of definitions of social capital, then turns to issues in measurement, and finally, presents some evidence on the consequences of social capital.
